Skirting boards serve the function of protecting your walls and can be an impressive feature to bring a room together. But due to their proximity to the floor, they tend to be a popular dust collector. Not to mention the bashing endured by toys, toes, shoes and more, so in next to no time, they are covered with smears of dirt and scuff marks. When they are clean, they refresh the space and make it much lighter.
Follow these tips regularly to prevent dirt from caking up and causing a big grimy mess that will need tougher cleaning methods if left unattended.
For Light Cleaning
The first and most obvious culprit is dust. By regularly using a dust mop (find one with an extended handle to prevent straining your back), a broom with nylon bristle or even a paintbrush, you can easily dislodge and remove dust from crevices.
Vacuum Cleaner
Almost every vacuum cleaner comes with a brush attachment which is great not only for dislodging dust but sucking it up as well. When there is a lot of dust and debris, this is a better option than a dust mop that might just transfer the dust to another area in the home.
Soap and Warm Water
If all else fails. Make sure to wring out the cloth or sponge so it is damp rather than wet so as not to damage the boards over time. A great tip is to use fabric softener instead of soap, which will not only clean your boards but leave them smelling great too!
Tumble Dryer Sheets
Some experts use this alternative to conventional soap and water. Due to its static properties, this is a great way to prevent dust and debris from sticking to your skirting boards.
White Vinegar
For tougher stains, an old medium that serves many cleaning purposes in any household – vinegar. Mix some white vinegar with warm water and apply the same procedure you would with soap and water. The required vinegar concentration will depend on how tough the stain is.
