How To Prepare Your Home For Interior Painting

One of the most important things you can do to achieve a professional interior paint job is to pay careful attention to your preparation. You may be wondering why? Because preparation matters! Most professional paint companies that provide a quality paint job will tell you that without proper preparation there is little chance that you will achieve the professional finish you are looking for. Here are six things you can do to ensure that your paint job goes smoothly and looks professional.

Checklist

Put together a workable paint plan by walking it through in your mind, identifying any problem areas and how to work around them. Jot down any key items to create a working checklist that can be used throughout the project and stay on track.

a. Furniture Protection

To avoid damage move furniture away from the walls and cover them entirely or remove them from the room if possible.

b. Wall Plate Removal

Remove all light switches and outlet covers to prevent a ragged, unprofessional look.

c. Floor Covering

Use canvas coverings to cover the floor at least 3 feet around the perimeter of the room or the entire floor if the ceiling is to be painted as well.

d. Ladders and Scaffolding

Use appropriate platform support or a stepladder. Ensure that the scaffold system is set up securely and check its stability for safety before starting the paint job.

e. Surface Cleaning

Patch any holes and blemishes with a drywall patching compound and clean the wall surfaces and trims by removing all dust with a soft microfibre cloth. Use a solution of dish soap and water to remove any grease from the entire surface that will be painted.

f. Emergency Clean Up

Before you apply a single brushstroke, ensure you have the appropriate solution on hand to wipe up any spills. For latex paint, all you will need is water and rags but if you are using enamel or oil-based paint you will need thinners or mineral spirits as recommended by the manufacturer and follow the instructions for paint clean up printed on the side of the tin. Mineral spirits are generally recommended for interior painting to control fumes.

Other tips to create a crisp, professional finish include applying a coat of primer and covering the trim with painter’s tape to get that smooth, professional transition between wall and trim. The tape not only protects the trim but also creates a perfectly straight line when removed.
