Skirting boards don't only serve to close the gaps between the lower parts of interior walls and flooring. The wide variety of shapes and materials available can form an integral step towards furnishing a space. Selecting the right colour and profile can add interesting finishing touches to the interior design for homes and businesses.
What are MDF Skirting Boards?
The skirting board material will determine how long they will last, the method of skirting board installation, and how they will enhance the overall décor of the space. Skirting boards are generally made of vinyl, softwood, or MDF board nailed, screwed, or glued to the wall.
MDF stands for Medium Density Fibreboard, an artificial material manufactured from wood fibres left over from hard or softwood projects. High pressure and temperatures are combined with resins and waxes to bind these fibres together and form sheets of material ideal for skirting boards.
There are three common types of MDF – lightweight, standard grade, and high-density. Lightweight MDF looks identical to standard grade but is slightly weaker and lighter. High-density MDF contains a higher content of wood fibres as it's made from higher-quality wood. This helps to give it a clean, smooth finish compared to the soft, more brittle appearance of standard and lightweight MDF.
Why is it More Beneficial to Install MDF Skirting Boards?
MDF is an excellent material for skirting boards as it takes less time to prepare and install than softwood and is more cost-effective. All it requires is a light sanding and a primer for painting. Softwoods are limited in sizes that range from 69mm to 219mm, while MDF can be cut to any size.
MDF vs Other Skirting Board Materials
Other options like pine or oak are good but not as sturdy or water-resistant as MDF. Also, because they are natural materials, they often have defects like cracks and knots that affect the smoothness of the finish. Choosing a high-density MDF board with a smooth, well-cut finish prevents furriness problems with a lightweight or standard-grade MDF board.
